The "Kawas"- traditional Muslim consular guard

The "Kawas" was a traditional Muslim consular guard.The" Kawas" was an esteemed job for those who held it during the Ottoman Turkish period.The job still exists until the present day in the City of Jerusalem  at the Greek Orthodox and the Latin Patriarchate .The "Kawas" or guards are seen walking infront of all religious processions led by patriarchs and bishops.They wear fezzes and outfitsembroidered with silver and metallic threads that have not changed since the old days .
